Buckhorn Island State Park, at the northern tip of Grand Island, contains diverse habitats and ecosystems in the terrestrial and aquatic realms and supports abundant wildlife. Significant habitat restoration projects have occurred at this site over the last 15 years (marsh restoration, sedge meadow invasive removal) and have continued in 2018 with wetland forest invasive removal.
Invasive species management was completed during the winter, spring, and summer over roughly 248.8 acres of the park. Through funding from the Niagara Greenway Ecological Fund and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation Sustain Our Great Lakes Fund (NFWF SOGL), Buffalo Audubon is partnering with National Audubon, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Ecology & Environment, and Applied Ecological Services to provide coordination of these efforts.
A number of ecological goals are the focus of this project, including preserving and protecting ecological integrity, implementing restoration, and supporting connectivity between important regional habitats. Through active invasive species management activities followed by restoration plantings, this project will protect and enhance existing resident, migratory, and breeding bird habitat.
Phase II funding has recently been secured by the National Audubon Society from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Sustain Our Great Lakes fund for continued work here in NY as well as other connected areas throughout the Great Lakes. We are excited to be part of these significant conservation initiatives. If you're interested in contributing to our community science efforts at Buckhorn (if you like getting up REAL early to record bird sightings) contact Tom Kerr at [email protected] for more information!
